Email to Sen. Darling and Rep. Wasserman
April 14, 2003
Sen. Alberta Darling and Rep. Sheldon Wasserman:
I was surprised to learn about your decision not to release the e-mail addresses recently requested, through the Wisconsin open records law, by an individual identified in the press as ‘J. Rice.’ I say this because personal e-mail addresses WERE part of the voter list information provided to the DPW by the state. Since the State Elections Board, in dismissing my Complaint, recently determined such information to be in the public domain, it is curious why you now label it private information.
You may also be interested to know that other private information about hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents was also provided to the DPW by the state. This includes Social Security numbers, unlisted telephone numbers, political party membership, and /or information about political candidates or issues they support or oppose.
Furthermore, the DPW provided to the state a significant amount of similar private information. Since such information was placed on state computers and was used in the daily work of state employees, based on what the Board determined, it is only logical to presume this information is in the public domain as well.
